International Stammering Awareness Day (ISAD)

International Stammering Awareness Day (ISAD), also known as International Stuttering Awareness Day, is observed annually on October 22nd. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about the challenges faced by the estimated one percent of the global population who stutter. On this day, stuttering communities and organizations worldwide unite to host events and campaigns that highlight the difficulties encountered by people who stutter. The aim is to challenge negative perceptions, combat discrimination, and dispel myths suggesting that individuals who stutter are less capable or less intelligent. ISAD was established in 1998 through the collaborative efforts of individuals who stutter and professionals specializing in fluency disorders. Prominent organizations advocating for this cause include The International Stuttering Association (ISA), the International Fluency Association (IFA), and the European League of Stuttering Associations.

The objectives of ISAD are threefold:

1
To alter public attitudes and reduce societal discrimination against people who stutter.
3

To foster a supportive community for exchanging ideas and strengthening connections among researchers, people who stutter, clinicians, and parents of children who stutter

2

To enhance the self-esteem and opportunities of individuals who stutter, empowering them to achieve their goals.

ISAD also serves as a platform to honor notable individuals who stutter and have made significant contributions across various fields, both historically and in the present day. This day provides a vital opportunity to build a more empathetic and inclusive world for the millions living with stuttering. Despite advancements in research and clinical practice, many individuals and families still lack access to necessary support and services. Encouraging open discussions about stuttering and its associated challenges is crucial, even though not everyone may feel comfortable being open about their stuttering. The continued growth of ISAD reflects the increasing global commitment to spreading its message and supporting those affected by stuttering.
